First up, let me just say that Valentine’s Day is just another day and a way to sell greetings cards. Repeat after me: It. Does. Not. Define. Me. Okay, now we’ve got that out of the way!
That said, if you’re going through a break-up or a bereavement, or maybe you’ve been single for a long time and it’s getting you down, Valentine’s and the days leading up to it can be hard. People talking about their plans, getting flowers delivered to the office, posting on social media… it can get to you.
So, let’s look at some things that can help you get through this Valentine's Day.
1.Focus on others: Do nice things for other people. This can make you feel more connected and you might just make someone's day.
2.Treat yourself: Make time for things you enjoy that perhaps no one else does – spend the day doing you! If you need to take the day off work, go for it – I won’t tell!
3.Practice mindfulness: Take ‘Valentine’s Day’ out of the equation and notice how your day is going outside of any external expectations. Are you enjoying your food or that TV show you’re watching? Great! Celebrate that. Be in this moment. Go for a nice walk and appreciate all the beauty in the world.
4.Spend time with friends or family: These relationships are just as important as romantic ones, so make time for them.
5.Stay away from social media: If you still feel it will be hard to get through the day seeing happy couples everywhere (even though we know social media doesn’t tell the whole story), turn off your notifications for the day and stay off that feed. It's good to have a break every now and then anyway.
And remember, it will all be over by February 15th. So stay strong, you’ve got this! And know that you are a whole and wonderful person just as you are.
Until next time, take care.
