Winter can be a difficult time of year.
Along with the shorter days and colder temperatures, Christmas seems to get earlier and earlier (they were playing Christmas songs on the radio in mid-November!) For some, this brings the added stress to the forefront. You may say, “But Christmas is a joyful time of year!” and yes, it absolutely can be. It’s helpful to have something to look forward to on the cold, dark days. But in a year where many are struggling financially, it may not be such a jolly prospect.
So, how do we beat the winter blues? By ignoring it all together, or running headfirst into it?
Should we “hibernate”?
Winter is a time when many animals and flora go into hibernation. So, does it make sense for humans to do this too? It’s a nice thought sometimes, just to curl up indoors until the warmer days return.
But, if we look to the Nordic peoples, known for being some of the happiest in the world, despite their cold climbs, we see that they actually embrace winter.
They love being outdoors, doing winter activities and connecting with nature, appreciating the beauty to be found at this time of year. They try to get out in the daylight as much as possible, as well as having plenty of light in their homes (including candles, part of the Hygge concept), and maintaining a normal sleep routine. These things are extremely important for good sleep and good mental and physical health.
The other thing our Scandinavian friends do is to spend lots of quality time with loved ones. Rather than isolating themselves, they celebrate togetherness and community. Little things like Fika (taking a break from work for a coffee, a cake and a chat), can help with this.
It’s all about balance
Remember, this is about quality time, so don’t feel pressured to have to go to all the parties/meals and see family who you don’t get along with. And when thinking about embracing non-hibernation, don’t feel like this means having to do the most.
As with many things in life, it’s all about balance.
In conclusion, try to get outside every day during daylight hours, enjoy cosy chats with loved ones, and do what makes you happy!
Let me know in the comments what helps you make the most of winter.
Until next time, take care.
